The arithmetic
Why a 10 % failure rate is not a 10 % surcharge.
If one print in ten is scrapped, every usable part carries the cost of 1 ÷ (1 − 0.1) prints — about 11 % more, not 10 %. The higher the failure rate, the wider that gap: at 30 % it is over 42 %.
Electricity is usually the smallest line and the most often guessed wrong, because most of the draw goes into the heated bed rather than the motors. The real figure comes from a plug-in power meter, not from the rating on the supply.
Machine rate is the line most often forgotten: take the printer price plus consumables, divided by the hours you expect from it. Leave it out and every quote you give is below cost.
Should I count my own time?
Yes, if you sell the part. Removing supports, sanding, inspecting and packing usually cost more than the plastic. Put them in the labour line at the rate you actually want to be paid.
What failure rate should I use?
Use your own record rather than a plausible number. Count the prints you scrapped last month. On engineering materials and tall parts it is markedly higher than on small PLA prints.
Why is there no filament price built in?
Because retail prices move constantly and differ by seller. A prefilled number would go stale silently and skew every quote built on it, so the field is left for you.
